communities within the Commonwealth. About the Job: The School
Safety Officer is responsible for implementing the consistent daily
application of procedures and best practices to ensure the safety,
security, and welfare of all staff and students at Yvonne B. Miller
High School and Post-Secondary Programs. This position reports
directly to the Director of School Security and Staff Safety.
Individuals selected for this role must attain DCJS School Safety
Officer Certification within 60 days of hire, with continued SSO
recertification every two (2) years. Additionally, incumbents must
obtain and maintain CPR certification. Minimum Qualifications •
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of safety
and security • Knowledge of adolescent development to include brain
development, mental health, and impulse regulation • Ability to
establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and
students • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions •
Ability to monitor student behavior and deter inappropriate
behavior while in the education setting • Knowledge of conflict
resolution and crisis intervention • Demonstrated ability to
quickly assess situations and provide the appropriate response •
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in
writing to maintain records/documentation and prepare reports •
Ability to perform physical intervention (restraint) techniques in
accordance with procedure and training • Considerable work-related
experience, including security-related experience required.
